This book tells the story of a Canadian (hence American) born girl named Rose Ferron, and also known as “Little Rose.” At the age of three, she was an ecstatic, i.e., her senses having been suspended, she was raised to the contemplation of supernatural things. When she was about thirteen she became ill and endured her sufferings with heroic patience. At the age of twenty-four appeared the stigmata (the marks of Our Lord’s wounds) on her hands, feet, heart and shoulder, including those of the flagellation, of the crown of thorns and last of all, those of the “Ecce Homo” (the wounded face of Our Lord). “Little Rose” has been branded by Christ with more stigmata than any other stigmatic person in America. Father Boyer studied her case very closely, having frequently visited her, observing these phenomena in the light of mystical science. This book is the first to treat of an American ecstatic and stigmatisee. It will therefore arouse great interest particularly in some parts of New England, as she lived and died in Woonsocket, R.I.
Little Rose Looked Like St. Terese of Lisieux
Father P. Leford, of West Chazy, N.Y., on seeing Rose for the first time, thought she had such a great resemblance to the “Little Flower” whom he had known, that he could not help telling her so.
The Blood of Her Stigma Gave Out Sweet Smelling Odors
Father E. Leonard, of Montreal, was sitting by her bedside and helping to dress Rose’s crippled hand. As he was examining the blood oozing from that stigma, his piety overcame his human respect and, leaning forward, he reverently kissed that wound; meanwhile, a sweet odor filled the air he was breathing; it resembled no perfume with which he was familiar, his hands became saturated with it. Walking out of the room he told his companions what had happened and extended his hands still full of its fragrance; but they laughed and would not believe; they thought he had perfumed his hands for the sake of a joke. That sweet odor could still be scented on his hands the following morning.
